don't hold back lou...

Sienna Miller, Hayden Christensen and Guy Pearce just started filming "Factory Girl," in which Miller plays Andy Warhol's drug-addled muse Edie Sedgwick.

But Lou Reed has already formed his opinion of director George Hickenlooper and his cast.

"They're all a bunch of whores," the rock god tells us.

"I read that script," Reed said the other night at a party for his new photo shows at the Hermès boutique and the Steven Kasher Gallery. "It's one of the most disgusting, foul things I've seen — by any illiterate retard — in a long time. There's no limit to how low some people will go to write something to make money."

whale vomit is worth more than reefer?

An Australian couple who picked up an odd-looking fatty lump from a quiet beach are in line for a cash windfall.

Leon Wright and his wife took home a 14.75kg lump of ambergris, found in the innards of sperm whales and used in perfumes after it has been vomited up.

Sought after because of its rarity, ambergris can float on the ocean for years before washing ashore.

Worth up to $20 a gram, Mr Wright's find on a South Australian beach could net his family US$295,000 (£165,300).

Ron Vergerio doesn't have a ritual that he goes through before Steelers games.

"I'm afraid I'd go over the top," said Vergerio, whose torso and arms are covered in tattoos of his favorite Steelers players.

A bus driver who lives in Springdale Township, Vergerio, 52, has spent more than 200 hours in the chair of tattoo artist Chris Blick of American Tattoo in Verona. He's lost track of the cost.

"It's pretty much," he said.

ah the maiden test century...

India wicket-keeper Mahendra Dhoni struck a superb maiden Test century as his team recovered to 441-5, 147 behind Pakistan at stumps on day three.

Rahul Dravid recorded his second successive hundred and took his second wicket partnership with VVS Laxman to 197, an Indian record in Pakistan.

However, four wickets fell for 45 in 11 overs after lunch and as Dhoni came in 107 were needed to save the follow-on.

Dhoni hit some fierce strokes in an unbroken 160 stand with Irfan Pathan.

Dravid completed his half-century by driving the opening ball of the day from Mohammad Asif straight down the ground for four.

Laxman, 28 not out overnight, reached his fifty from 147 balls with seven fours.

a new twist on the barry beck hockey report...

from an e mail barry sent about this weekend man's league action. thanks to barry for sharing his glory with the rest of us. great work by him.

I had gotten cross checked across my chest in front of our net two shifts earlier and I was pissed and wanted to take off this guy's head. Then I was lurking on the blue line trying to hold it strong as they had sent floaters and cherry pickers all night long behind me. I read this pass through the middle of the high slot like the post I read on the pot earlier that morning. After controling the puck I felt pressure from all sides and fired a slapper high to the stick side. It sort of handcuffed the keeper and he got a piece of it with his blocker but the shot was so heavy that it went in. I made a wide rink turn after seeing it hit the netting and looked at the opposing teams bench and gave a few fist pumps on one skate. It felt good. In the final minutes they applied some serious pressure and even pulled their goalie with 2 mins to play. I blocked a shot from the point and we iced it a few times to kill off the clock. I was +1 for the night as my D partner aslo scored on a nice rush. For sure I was the first or second star of the game.

January 19, 2006—Pitting two hands against thousands of stinging tentacles, a diver attaches a tracking device to a giant Nomura's jellyfish off the coast of Japan on October 4, 2005.

Since last summer, Japanese waters have been inundated with the massive sea creatures, which can grow 6.5 feet (2 meters) wide and weigh up to 450 pounds (220 kilograms).

LONDON (AFP) - Watch out: Monday, January 23 is going to be the unhappiest day of the year, according to a British university researcher.

Cliff Arnall, a health psychologist at the University of Cardiff, specialising in confidence-building and stress management, told AFP the prediction was the result of some gruelling mathematics.

Post-Christmas blues, the return to work after the holidays, mounting bills to pay for the parties, the challenge of keeping New Year's resolutions, the slender prospects of fun in the weeks ahead and chilly winter temperatures for those in the northern hemisphere all add up, he said.

These factors, which he combined in a complex formula, came out showing that the Monday closest to January 24 would be the most dismal of the year.

this guy is going crazy this season...

LOS ANGELES — Kobe Bryant, often unstoppable, played at a higher level than even he imagined possible. The Los Angeles Lakers' star scored a phenomenal 81 points Sunday night _ the second-highest total in NBA history _ in a 122-104 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

Only Wilt Chamberlain's storied 100-point game nearly 44 years ago ranks higher.

sidney who?

a rangers update from barry

I'd just like to point out that Prucha is such a stud! 2 goals and an assist tonight on the first 3 Ranger goals of the game. He now has 1 more goal than Sid the Kid. Nylander added a goal on a nice redirect from Poti in the 4-2 win. Philly lost so the Rangers are only 5 points out of first place.

very entertaining game...

it had a little bit of everything. late charge by the knicks to send it into overtime, a fight, then antonio davis casually walking into the stands to defend his wifee. then crawford nailed a three-bomb to tie it with 4 seconds remaining in the ot quickly followed by ben gordon hitting the game-winner at the buzzer. first n.b.a. game i've cared at all about in some time and it felt right.

a walk home with fredeeky

the transit strike changed my life. i walk everywhere now. i walk from times square to macdougal late at night and i love it. i rock some jams, enjoy a sando and before i know it i'm home. last night i took some snaps and i thought that i would share them with my beloved readers. it's been too long since i shared with you. some of the high lights are the photo of the homeless guy that i paid a dollar to let me take his photo and the guy behind the counter at the deli where i reloaded on batteries to keep the photo essay going.

the jams are a big part of the night walking lifestyle so i thought that i would share the jams that inspired the above photos. there's so much sharing going on right now that it's beautifoo.
