long awaited art attack...

The 'appropriateness' of art as it references politics and 9/11 has been debated since last spring and will probably come to a head this weekend with the anniversary of 9/11. Perhaps the biggest issue is that of the Drawing Center, which was removed from The Freedom Center due to criticism about the inappropriateness of this gallery at the memorial site because of "political" images (also called Anti/Un-American images) in art it has exhibited. Here's Amy Wilson's that was in a Drawing Center exhibition and sparked 1,000 articles because of the depiction of an Abu Ghraib prisoner:

As part of the 4th anniversary of 9/11 there are two exhibitions of note this weekend, which will surely start more debate on issues of art, politics, and rememberance:

"A Knock at the Door" is one that the Daily News hates but many will love because of it's view that art and the First Amendment have been under attack since 9/11. The show is part of a larger forum this weekend called 'What Comes After' on how cities recuperate from terrorism.

There is also an exhibition curated by the highly regarded art critic Arthur Danto at Apex Art that includes artist like Cindy Sherman's art post-9/11. You can read his statement about the show here.
