so much f'ing culture up on here...

ART ATTACK!

The big art world news is that a worldwide record was set for a sculpture sold at auction. Brancusi's Bird in Space (1922-3) sold for $27,456,000 at Christie's on Wednesday. Apparently someone found it malingering in an old European's attic and even Brancusi scholars didn't know about it.

Next week are the juicier sales: Contemporary. This means art that includes nudity, jokes, and celebrities. Sotheby's has the Contemporary Masters (de Kooning, Pollock, Kline), but Christie's includes a lot of recent art. Lot 63 at Christie's is the extremely NSFW Jeff Koons photograph "Red Butt" where he and his ex-wife the Italian porn star named La Cicciolina (translation: The Meat) share an intimate moment. Follow this link if you dare.

Hipster friendly Elizabeth Peyton's "John Lennon" is estimated at at Christie's for $300,000 - 400,000

Maurizio Cattelan's "Frank and Jamie" estimated at Christie's for 1,400,000 - 1,800,000

Sales are opened to the public at Sotheby's, but Christie's has a smaller sales room so they're closed to the public.
