BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (Reuters) -- Defiant batting by Brian Lara and Shivnarine Chanderpaul rebuilt the West Indies innings on the first day of the third test against South Africa on Thursday.
The hosts slumped to 12 for three before Lara and Chanderpaul stopped the rot with a stand of 138 that helped the home side reach 167 for four at tea.
The West Indies captain batted for three hours, faced 138 balls and hit six fours. Ryan Hinds was nine not out at the interval.
