what do you think of this one barry...
EDMONTON - A trio of hockey fans says other Canadian teams should be able to compete for the Stanley Cup if NHL players remain locked out all season.
If the lockout continues, the cup should return to its challenge cup format open to any team, they argue.
Originally called the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, it was first presented in 1893 to a hockey team from the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association, then the top league in the country.
"I have for some time been thinking that it would be a good thing if there were a challenge cup which should be held from year to year by the champion hockey team in the Dominion [of Canada]," Lord Stanley wrote.
In 1926, the NHL became trustee of the cup. But with the league not playing, Thurston says the NHL should stand back and allow another tournament that could include teams from the Canada University Hockey Championship and minor professional hockey league teams in leagues such as the AHL.
