loved kirby in the 80's...

no one played harder or seemed to love the game more. the 1991 world series was one of the best ever, but kirby was a controversial guy after he retired, with reports of spousal abuse and all. also, it's sketchy to have a stroke so young, but god forbid anyone would even hint at 'roids or anything. anyway, at the end of the day he's a hall of famer and one of the great players of the 80's.

i guess my problem is more that sports people love to make a guy out to be a saint (kirby in 1991) and then a total wife beating d-bag (kirby 2001) and then a saint again when he dies. he was basically put in the hall of fame cause he was a nice guy that people loved and felt sorry for (since he had to retire), and then it turns out that maybe he was a little more complicated and people can't handle that. also when anyone who played pro sports during that time (and has some rage issues) dies before 50, steroids obviously come to mind.

the above, an 1985 rookie of kp, is not his actually rookie card. there was a fleer update issued the year before. what i think is interesting about this card however, is the twinkies logo... really bizarre one. also, i must say as a follow-up to fred's post that Don Mattingly never went crazy and didn't make the hall... cooperstown better check it self. what about george brett you ask? roids... big time.
