On Tuesday, spectators descended on this underprepared seaside town about 20 miles south of San Francisco to watch the so-called Super Bowl of Surf Contests at Mavericks, one of the world's most consistently dangerous — and photogenic — surf spots.

In front of an estimated 30,000 spectators, most of whom could not discern one rider from another or even see more than a fraction of each ride, the South African Grant Baker, 32, stroked into one of the biggest and best-shaped waves of the hourlong final to take home the Mavericks Surf Contest's $30,000 first-place check.
