MOTO FOR THE "05-'06 NY RANGERS: MAKING THE IMPOSSIBLE LOOK EASY...

sorry to use an old photo, but kevin weekes is my favorite ranger and he looks awesome here. barry, there is always space for ranger reports. i am getting really fired up for hockey thanks to your enthusiasm.

With just about 24 hours until they drop the puck on the 2005-06 NHL season I thought I'd contribute my final Rangers Report of the preseason/lockout/off-season.

Most of the members of the press have painted a bleak picture for the 05-06 Rangers. They point to holes in the defense and younger players who have yet to prove they are impact players.

I have a more optimistic prediction for the team and believe they will be playoff contenders come April. The Rangers will play a European style of hockey this year which they will get away with due to the leagues rule changes. I believe in Kevin Weeks as a goalie and due to the holes in the defense he will be key to keeping the blueshirts in close games. The Toronto native is looking forward to his first full
year with the club. Kasparitus will bring the grit and physical excitement to the defense and apparently will represent the team as captain this year. No doubt he will continue to be a fan favorite in MSG. Rucchin, Straka and Nylander are welcome newcomers that will contribute in different ways. Rucchin will be a great presence in the locker room and will match up well against opposing teams first line
well. Nylander is a playmaker who will also see lots of pk time due to his defensive prowess. Straka is deadly on the breakaway so will be key to the shootouts we will see on numerous occasions this season.

Ranger fans have to be excited about the return of Jed Ortmeyer who in '03-'04 won the Steven A. McDonald Extra Effort award as voted by the fans in his rookie campaign. Ort is a true competitor and great to have on the squad. A year in Hartford has solidified his game and the former Michigan Wolverine may be a year or two away from being an All Star.

Look for the Rangers to sneak into the playoffs as the 6th, 7th or 8th seed in the East. While it is doubtful they will seriously contend for Lord Stanley's Cup this year, the front office has built an exciting team that will compete in the new era of the NHL. At least Hockey is back! I'll be checking in throughout the season provided Deeky continues to allow this spot on the precious internet real estate that is his blog.

European-style hockey sounds soo hot right now. Let's have a Deeky field trip to MSG once it gets a little colder.
