Federal agents seized more than 900 pounds of cocaine yesterday from a house in Palisades Park, the latest in a growing number of "stash houses" in quiet suburbs that agents say have become popular warehouses for drug traffickers.

The seizure at 36 East Harwood Terrace ranked among the largest in recent memory in New Jersey. Authorities estimated the drugs had a street value of at least $40 million -- and perhaps twice that amount.

"When the agents got in there, they just saw cocaine all over the place," said Michael Pasterchick, the special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration's Newark division. "In the living room, in the bedrooms, hall closets -- just bags and bags of cocaine."
