A DIMINUTIVE 28-year-old woman from a landlocked north England village yesterday joined James Cook, Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama and Francis Chichester in the litany of history's great seafarers.

Ellen MacArthur, who learnt to sail in a dinghy on a lake near her home in the tiny village of Whatstandwell in Derbyshire, set a new round-the-world record for a solo sailor of 71 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes, 33 seconds.
