first place yankees...
nice job by the yanks in general this season and i can't wait for some playoff baseball, but did anyone read the a-rod story in sports illustrated? intriguing giambi facts that make me love him even more:
Torre's trademark placidity ended, though, when Giambi asked to talk to Torre in Seattle. "Skip," Giambi told Torre, "it's time to stop coddling him."
For all the scorn heaped upon Giambi for his ties to the BALCO steroid scandal, he is a strong clubhouse voice because he plays with a passion that stirs teammates and even opponents. This season, for instance, he reprimanded his former Oakland A's teammate, Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada, for occasionally showing up late to games out of frustration over another losing Baltimore season. "You're better than that," he told Tejada. So Giambi's gripe about Rodriguez sounded an alarm with Torre.
Before Giambi went to Torre, he had scolded Rodriguez after a 13-5 win in Boston on Aug. 19. Irked that Rodriguez left four runners on base in the first three innings against a shaky Josh Beckett, Giambi thought A-Rod needed to be challenged. "We're all rooting for you and we're behind you 100 percent," Giambi recalls telling Rodriguez, "but you've got to get the big hit."
"What do you mean?" was Rodriguez's response, according to Giambi. "I've had five hits in Boston."
"You f------ call those hits?" Giambi said. "You had two f------ dinkers to rightfield and a ball that bounced over the third baseman! Look at how many pitches you missed!"
wait for it to load and then watch it...
it is one of my all time favorite moments of hilarity. quick background is that jimi hendrix was a guitarist for little richard for a brief time before he was placed into the dipper and poured upon the world. so this is little richard being interviewed for a documentary on hendrix. enjoy.
barry beck's ryder cup preview...
The US Ryder Cup team has not won a match since 1999 when Justin Leonard's 45 foot putt on the 17th green in Brookline caped an improbable comeback and sent Andre the Giant and Barry Beck into jubilant celebration. Andre and Barry stormed the the 18th green with the over served crowd on a beautiful day in Beantown after Payne Stewart, as the true sportsman he was, conceded his insignificant match to Monty (or as the Brookline Crowd referred to him as Tuna for his close appearance to Bill Parcels). When Andre and Barry got to the green they were showered with champagne sprayed by some of the US players, caddies and Captain Crenshaw. Big Ben Crenshaw left the grounds of The Country Club the previous night saying, "I'm a big believer in Fate and I have a feeling that we will win this thing." Sure enough the US team orchestrated quite possibly the best comeback in sports history. Perhaps it was the overzealous celebration that afternoon in Brookline that has motivated Team Euro to improbable wins at the Belfry in 2002 and Oakland Hills at the last matches in 2004. Both times David slayed Goliath as a bunch of Euros beat teams led by Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson and celebrated with the same enthusiasm that came over the Andre the Giant, Barry Beck, and the rest of the US team in 1999.
The US arrived in Ireland this week with a renewed perspective on the competition having learned from a litany of their mistakes in the previous two matches. With four Ryder Cup rookies and a core of experienced veterans including Tiger Woods who appears more comfortable as a team leader for these matches the US team is considered the underdog. The K-Club golf venue they are playing should favor the Americans as it is an Arnoald Palmer designed track in the mold of a traditional North Amercian woodland course. This should help the Yanks who will not be forced to play the traditional Irish links course on European soil.
If the Americans did not have enough motivation at the K-Club from all the naysayers and their recent poor performances in the matches they need not look further than the Irish tabloids this week. The Dubliner Magazine this week went on to post a story about the American WABs (Wives and Brides) in saying, "Most American golfers are married to women who cannot keep their clothes on in public," the story stated. "Is it too much to ask that they leave them at home for the Ryder Cup?" They posted a topless picture they claimed to be the beautiful Elin Nordegren, Tiger's wife next to the story. Further, the story described Amy Lepard, wife of U.S. Ryder Cup player Chad Campbell, as a "large-chested singer." It said David Toms' wife, Sonya, wears a bikini around the house because it's "liberating." And it said Jim Furyk's wife, Tabitha, wasn't interested in him until he became a multimillionaire. These comments clearly incited the underdogs and should help motivate the US Squad.
Unfortunately, Andre and Barry will not be at the K-Club the help support the underdog Americans in this year's Ryder Cup. Nonetheless, they will follow the telecast of the broadcast and should the US win, jubilation rivaling 1999 in Brookline will follow.

it's been too long...
sorry for the absence, but i've been on a drinking binge these last few weeks. first things first, lots of love goes out to loyal reader and player/coach reg dunlop who has officially moved back to norcal. reg dunlop (formerly reggie roby) was one of the most devoted readers of fredeeky and was everybody's favorite drinking companion and funny maker. we're already missing him here in new york, but also know that he will be dropping some s.f.c. reports on us from time to time. now he is closer to his beloved barry bonds and is at the epicenter of the grateful dead cover band scene. so expect to find him noodling to dire wolf in the forrest if you ever come to the bay area. that alone sounds like a pretty good reason to hit san fran if you ask me.

new commenters make me so excited...
this one's an aussie and a cricket expert to boot. since matt seems a little boring for the blizzy, we will call him shane warne in honor of quite possibly the best spin bowlier of all-time as well as one of the more intriguing and controversial figures in modern cricket. so let's all put our hands together and observe and respect shane warne.
